Wastewater Treatment Plant Faces Fines For Sewage Spills

According to Marin Independent-Journal the Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District spilled 766,700 gallons of partially treated wastewater into the San Francisco Bay between February 15 and February 21 after an underwater pipe at the district's Fort Baker Wastewater Treatment Plant burst. The break occurred in the underwater pipe joint due to corrosion of old equipment. The wastewater had been treated but not disinfected before spilling into the San Francisco Bay. The same line broke again on February 27 spilling another 2,700 gallons of sewage.

This district has had many other previous offenses. In August of 2008 the district discharged 9,000 gallons of raw sewage to Swede’s Beach causing beaches to close. The Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District faces fines of $332,000 and 30 days to respond.

If you would like more information to avoid or resolve this kind of problem, please contact Mark Kahl, PE (530) 305-5477 or use our Contact Us form.
